The first Clásico of this La Liga season between the two has been postponed and rescheduled for 18 December. It is to be noted that the match had been scheduled for Saturday 26 October but due to the fears of civil unrest and the fact that 9 Catalan separatist leaders had been sent to jail, it has been moved to the new date. These 9 separatist leaders were convicted of sedition for their involvement in the referendum and handed jail sentences of between nine and 13 years by Spain's Supreme Court.

Though La Liga proposed El Clásico to be shifted from Barcelona to Real Madrid; however, both the teams didn’t agree to it. The RFEF's competitions committee signed the decision of the new date, on Wednesday. However, it seems that La Liga is not happy with the decision made by the competition committee that scheduled the match to the new date, after an agreement was reached between Barcelona and Real Madrid, despite La Liga's objections - as the date in which the postponed Clasico should be played. As per the latest progress, La Liga is considering taking legal action after the postponed El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid was rescheduled for 18 December by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). It is to be noted that the first round of the Copa del Rey is set to take place on the same date. Irrespective of the final decision made in this regard and the recent progress as observed, the fans are very disappointed at the moment, and in rage, since they had been waiting since long for the battle.
